Use Email Shortcuts for Popular Webapps

Chapman as King Arthur in Holy Grail

Much like the pleading peasant from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, email is not quite dead yet (it feels fine … it’ll go for a walk … it feels happy). Did you know that tons of the Internet’s most popular apps and services let you interact with them via email?

Yup, you can send notes to Evernote, post a video to your Facebook wall, upload an image to Flickr, send an article to Instapaper to read later, send PDFs or Word documents to your Amazon Kindle, add tasks your To Do list on Remember the Milk, and even post to your WordPress blog—and more—all through email!

The problem is that most of the email addresses you get to interact with these services tend to be a little hard to memorize. Usually, they’re something like r3411y10ng3m4i2314akwhch@yourwebapp.com. If you can’t easily remember that gobbledygook of an email address then you won’t use it.

To help myself take better advantage of these apps I’m already using I came up with a simple address book hack to simplify the process. You can do the same to easily make sense of your accounts.

  1. Create a new entry wherever you keep your contacts (I use Address Book on OS X, but this works equally well in Outlook or even Google Contacts).
  2. Give the contact the first name “SendTo”.
  3. Use the service name for last name.
  4. Add your unique email address (some services have more than one address, go ahead an list them all).
  5. Additional details can be provided in the notes section. Remember the Milk, for example, provides some additional syntax for your tasks.

  1. Repeat steps 1-4 for each service you use.

After you’ve organized all your email accounts, fire up your favorite email client and give it a test spin.

In the To field type SendTo. You will be presented with a list of services available to you. To illustrate this point I’ve selected my SendTo Flickr email account and attached a screenshot to the email.

Please note that the email’s Subject became the title of the Flickr image.

So, there you have it. Email once again proves itself useful. It ain’t dead and it ain’t just for mailing your boss your TPS reports. What are you waiting for? Go on and try it out for yourself.

No Longer Running on Empty

Running on Empty

I can’t begin to express how excited I am for the New Year! I love the feeling of optimism and encouragement that permeates the very air during this time.

While I enjoyed participating in last year’s WordPress Post a Week Challenge there definitely were times when I felt like I was running on empty.

However, you can’t argue with results. And for the first time ever, I managed to blog at least once a week for an entire year!

During 2011 I averaged a respectable 1.3 posts per week. Maybe one day I’ll graduate to the Post a Day Challenge, but for now the Post a Week Challenge is about all I have the bandwidth to do.

Here are a few of the highlights from last year:

That said, I’m extremely pleased with my blogging results for 2011 and look forward participating again in the Post a Week Challenge for 2012!

I’ve explained why I blog and thanked you for reading, so what I really want to know is this—Will you be blogging this year? How often will you be blogging in 2012? Sound off in the comments below.

If You Read My Blog . . .

I’d like to give a huge welcome to everyone who’s come to slightly insightful courtesy of WordPress.com‘s Freshly Pressed.

It seems like just this week (it was) that I was saying how my goal was to get on Freshly Pressed and now it’s happened.

They promoted my post Do Giant Inflatable Animals Increase Car Sales? yesterday and now I’m at all time highs for page views and comments.

Now that you’ve visited slightly insightful I really hope you come back for more.

Remember, just like Pedro Sánchez says, “if you read my blog all of your wildest dreams will come true.”

Where Would You Go?

January 1st, is the day each year we remind ourselves what we want to do and be. One of the things I’ve told myself that I want to do more of each year is blogging.

Hopefully, with a little more effort on my part—and possibly a little inspiration from the The Daily Post at WordPress.com—I will post at least once a week in 2011.

Today’s challenge is a question I’ve been trying to answer for a few months now I’ve got some frequent flyer miles to burn before they expire.

List three countries you’d like to visit, and why you want to go.

Spain

A few years back, I learned that I had Spanish heritage and ever since then I have felt a tug to visit my ancestral homeland. While my Ayala roots are from the northern País Vasco region of the country, I would love to see Barcelona and Madrid as well.

Montenegro

It may not be my favorite movie (heck, it’s not even my favorite Bond movie), but ever since I saw the 2006 version of Casino Royale I’ve wanted to visit Montenegro to enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic Coast and it’s rich culture and history.

Thailand

The familiar has its own allure. In September of 2009 we spent the best vacation of our lives to date in Phuket, Thailand. We rode elephants in the jungle, snorkeled off the Phi Phi Islands, and lounged around at the JW Marriott Resort on Mai Kao Beach. I seriously hope to one day return with my family.

That’s it for me, but what are three countries you’d like visit and why? Sound off in the comments below … Or better yet, blog it and leave a link to your post!
