Just for fun, I took some pictures of some Super Mario toys our kids found inside a few Furuta Choco Eggs while in Singapore. The chocolate is OK, but the toys are fantastic.

I’ve uploaded the pictures to a collection of desktop wallpapers I’ve created on Flickr.

Microsoft Word on the iPhone for Free!

I recently read that Microsoft has been mulling over bringing Office to the Mac App Store. This would be a great boon to Mac users, however, what I think most people really want is for the Redmond software giant to bring Office to the iPhone/iPad (iOS) platform.

So, I’m pleased to announce that this week I was successfully able to get Microsoft Word running on my iPod Touch. Best of all, I did it all for free!

Because they’re really not all that evil, the fine folks at Microsoft released a special, Y2K compliant edition of Microsoft Word for free. However, because they really are kinda evil, the version they released only runs on DOS. You can still download Microsoft Word 5.5 free of charge.

Did you download it? So, now that you’ve got yourself a totally gratis copy of neither the latest, nor the greatest word processing software of all time, what’s the logical next step? Installing it on your iPhone, iPad, and/or iPod Touch, of course!

This hack is only possible if you have the iDOS app installed on your iOS device. If you’re running the 1.0 version of the app, you can add the files directly via iTunes otherwise you’ll have to add them directly to your device using iPhone Explorer, or something similar.

If you want a way to create and edit (extremely) simple Word docs on your iOS device AND you were fortunate enough to grab a copy of iDOS before it was yanked (again) from the AppStore this hack is right up your alley.

I’m not saying you should run DOS apps on your iPhone. I just like knowing that I can. What old school games and apps are you running on your iPhone? Which retro apps and games do you wish you could install? Sound off in the comments below.

305 years ago today American Founding Father, inventor, business man, publisher, self-improvement guru, and all-around great guy Benjamin Franklin was born. It wasn’t until recently that I learned to appreciate his genius.

If you haven’t already read his Autobiography, I highly recommend it. In his own words, Franklin provides unique insights into the times in which he lived. It also contains a wealth of practical knowledge that is just as applicable today as when Franklin originally wrote it.

One of my favorite sections of the Autobiography is found in the appendices under the title The Way to Wealth.. You can read it in its entirety here.

The full text is available for free from a variety of online sources. However, I recommend checking out the free LibroVox repository which links not only the ebook, but the audiobook in a variety of audio formats ready for your iPod.

I’m sure many of us have resolved to read more often in 2011. In a few short weeks most of us, however, will quit because “we just don’t have the time”. Audiobooks enable you to read in the car, the train, at the gym, while doing chores, etc. Make time to read this classic today by downloading it now.

7 Habits Weekly Planner

A while back, I was going through my copy of 7 Habits and noticed that the book mentioned that a copy of the Franklin Covey Weekly Habits Planner was available at their site.

However, when I went to download it, no such copy was available online. So, I decided to create my own.

7 Habits Weekly Planner

This template provides a weekly dashboard for assisting you to not only get stuff done, but to help you do the right stuff. It should prove useful to anyone working to improve their productivity using Covey’s acclaimed 7 Habits system.

I posted the template as a PDF and also included the original iWork Numbers file online at D*I*Y Planner.

The 7 Habits program is one of the best time management systems I’ve ever come across. I don’t follow it as much as I should, but the principles are sound and it’s a solid framework.
