Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreign

Definition of Foreign

When changed (even slightly), many things with which we are familiar can appear very foreign indeed.

Take the venerable Kit Kat bar. By all accounts, it’s quite unremarkable—milk chocolate on the outside and wafers on the inside.

Yet, these funky, flavored Kit Kats I found at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan are so foreign that they might as well have come from another world.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

As a self-proclaimed chocolate snob my usual claim is that when the chocolate is really, really good you don’t need to distract from its flavor by junking it up with filler.

Crunchie Inside (Focus)

However, inside each Cadbury Crunchie bar is a deliciously sweet, honeycombed center that’s just as awesome as the smooth milk chocolate on the outside.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Summer

It’s been quite some time since I last participated in the WordPress Photo Challenge. It’s not that they themes haven’t been inspiring, it’s just that I haven’t been in a photo snapping mood.

But this last week’s challenge is was something I can get excited about—Summer!

Grass (Pop Punch)

From the smell of fresh-cut grass to the way the blades bend beneath my toes, few things remind me of summer more than a lush, manicured lawn. It conjures up memories of picnics and barbecues, afternoon games at Dodger Stadium, and trips to the park.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Ready

Are you Ready for this week’s the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge? I bet you are. Because I’ve never been more Ready (even if I am a bit late).

Pencil & Paper 3 (LOHO)

It must be all the tests I’ve taken over the years, but nothing says ready to me quite like a sharpened number 2 pencil.

Pencil & Paper 2 (Hint of Vintage)

I love that moment right before you put graphite to paper. There are so many possibilities open to you.

Pencil & Paper 1 (Warm)

Whether it’s a Scantron or a sheet of college-ruled notepaper, as long as you’ve got your trusty number 2 you’re ready for anything.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Hope.

This week NASA shared a super-duper high resolution image (8000 by 8000 pixels!) of the Earth with the world. In case you missed it, here it is. I feel it ties in perfectly with this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: Hope.

I am moved by the beauty and majesty of our precious planet. What a wonderful world we have been given! It gives me hope for the future.

I didn’t take this picture, but I hope that some of my tax dollars were spent in paying for it.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Wonder

This weekend we helped my wife’s sister move into her new home. Instead of unloading boxes and furniture, however, we were brought in to clean the place up.

The previous occupants left a hideous mess which needed to be removed. Yet, within the debris something special caught my eye!

Macintosh Classic Logo (Pixelscreen)

I couldn’t believe it—a real honest to goodness, old school Macintosh Classic! Were my eyes deceived? Had the former tenants left in such a hurry that they’d neglected to retrieve their priceless treasure?

And then, I thought to myself…

“I wonder if this thing works!?!?”

At that moment, I knew I had an entry for this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge.

So, I grabbed the Mac, it’s keyboard, mouse, and cables, hooked them up and plugged it in.

Macintosh Classic (Unorthodox Pop)

As I waited with gleeful anticipation for the familiar Macintosh startup chime I was greeted instead with what sounded like a dying dial–modem and the smell of burning plastic.

Unfortunately, there was a reason that this particular Macintosh had not been brought with its owners.

Old School Macintosh Classic (Found)

This Macintosh Classic has passed on. It is no more. It has ceased to be. It’s expired and gone to meet its maker. In short, it’s run down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisible.

No longer did I wonder whether or not this Mac would run. For I knew that this was an ex-Mac.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Windows

When you hear the word windows do you first think of panes of glass or Operating Systems developed in Redmond, Washington?

Yeah, me too.

That’s why when I saw that the theme for this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge was Windows I knew what I wanted to share.

First, I considered of the Old School Windows logo.

…but I thought that would be too boring.

Next, I thought about the all-too-familiar “Blue Screen of Death“.

…but I thought that would be too snarky.

So, I decided to be more creative. Using the Mac-native DOS emulator Boxer

I installed Windows 3.11 (just because I can).

Now, behold and tremble, oh ye people of the Internet, at the wonder and majesty of early 1990′s software running on the latest and greatest from Cupertino!

Of course, what could be more iconic than of Windows’ Klondike Solitaire?

I blame Microsoft for the fact that a computer just doesn’t feel fully functional to me until it has an instance of solitaire running on it.
